Installer bug deleting a folder in the Start Menu

    This problem occurs for users that keep all their Start Menu shortcuts together in a common folder (e.g. Games) and not separated into subfolders within that folder. When installing BG2: ToB, the installer searches for the shortcut folder for BG2: SoA and replaces it with a new ToB one. This was done to remove the confusion of having different BG2 folders/shortcuts for the same game. However, if users specified a common Start Menu folder as described earlier, during the BG2: SoA installation, then this folder would be deleted during the BG2: ToB installation. Specifically, all shortcuts to other applications are deleted (the actual applications are untouched). Manually moving your BG2: SoA shortcut items to a different Start Menu folder than the one you originally specified will not work since the BG2: ToB installer finds out what the original folder was and proceeds on that assumption.

    The workaround to this problem is to uninstall BG2: SoA before installing BG2: ToB. Then reinstall BG2: SoA and use the default Start Menu folder provided or specify its own unique one. The BG2: ToB installation will only delete and replace this folder.

LaserLock and the "CD-Protection-Error. Insert Original Game-CD" error

    The European versions of the ToB CD (UK, German, French, Italian, Spanish) are copy protected by LaserLock. Unfortunately, LaserLock can cause problems with a small percent of CD and DVD drives, thereby not allowing the game to authenticate the CD of ToB in the drive. An example would be the Toshiba XM series of CDROMs: XM6202B, XM6402B, XM6502B, XM6602B, and XM6702B. The message "CD-Protection-Error. Insert Original Game-CD" is what pops up in such cases. To resolve this problem, download and install the official ToB patch version 26498.

After you try to open the 3rd seal in Watcher’s Keep, the final battle never starts.

    Apparently there have been several reports of this problem occurring. It is in fact an OpenGL driver issue and not a script error. Potentially related to Nvidia’s Detonator driver set version 12.42. To get around this problem, go into the BGConfig program and set the Graphics slider detail to minimum, the resolution to 640x480, and the color depth to 16-bit for the duration of the cut-scene. Once the cut-scene is over, you can reset your original graphic configuration.

The game stutters or pauses for short intervals while playing.

    There are several possible explanations for this behavior. Firstly there was indeed a bug within the game that caused this to happen, and this is fixed in the final patch. There are additional factors that have also caused this problem for players. Here are some solutions to try:

1  Turn off virus scanners or other applications running in the background or system tray: Your processor will have a tougher time running the game if it has to run other programs at the same time. If you think you have shut down any active programs, don’t forget to also turn off the programs running in your system tray (i.e. these are the little icons at the bottom right of your task bar where it says the time). The icons represent programs that are running in the background. For example, you should see by default the Volume control there, which is a program that is running (you can leave this on though). The most guilty of these system tray programs for causing BG2 to stutter are virus scanners (e.g. Mcaffee or Norton). Turn these off and see if there is an improvement in performance.

2  Turn off EAX of set the Ambient volume slider to 0: Some players have encountered stutter difficulties with EAX and have found that the difficulties disappear when turning it off. Another audio related solution that might work is to drag the Ambient volume slider (in-game Options Screen) to 0, which effectively turns off the ambient sfx.

3  Voodoo cards using 16-bit textures instead of 32-bit textures: If you enable 3D acceleration in the BGConfig program and are using a Voodoo card, you must remember to uncheck the 32-bit textures checkbox and use the 3Dfx OpenGL drivers. Leaving 32-bit textures would cause problems, and by some reports, a stuttering of the game.

4  Many bags of holding, gem bags, and scroll cases in inventory: The problem associated with having too many of these is fixed in the final patch. However, in the remote possibility of continued problems, try leaving these items in the containers in your Pocket Plane instead of in your character inventory.

How To Manually Uninstall BG2: Throne of Bhaal

    Here is the procedure to manually uninstall BG2: Throne of Bhaal. This will also uninstall BG2: Shadows of Amn.

1  Edit the system registry using the regedit utility. Remove the following keys under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\":
        BG2Main.exe
        bg2ep202.exe

2  Remove the following keys under "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\":
        English: {B8C3B479-1716-11D5-968A-0050BA84F5F7}
        French: {43D4C77E-4339-11D5-96E7-0050BA84F5F7}
        German: {5B09F344-4406-11D5-96E8-0050BA84F5F7}
        Italian: {C3817924-440B-11D5-96E8-0050BA84F5F7}
        Spanish: {68F40945-449D-11D5-96E9-0050BA84F5F7}

3  Go to your Program Files directory and find the hidden directory "InstallShield Installation Information" and delete the directories labeled:
        English: {8DAE4336-2B71-11D4-9A6C-006067325E47} and {B8C3B479-1716-11D5-968A-0050BA84F5F7}
        French: {43D4C77E-4339-11D5-96E7-0050BA84F5F7} and {5E30BDEB-9307-11D4-9AE0-006067325E47}
        German: {5B09F344-4406-11D5-96E8-0050BA84F5F7} and {5E30BDEB-9307-11D4-9AE0-006067325E47}
        Italian: {C3817924-440B-11D5-96E8-0050BA84F5F7} and {5E30BDEB-9307-11D4-9AE0-006067325E47}

4  Manually delete all the files and directories created by the previous installation attempts (this should return the system to its state before the original installation attempt) and try again to install from the CD.

Dramatic Increase in Loading and Saving Times

    After a certain point in your adventure though Throne of Bhaal, you may find that your saves and loads are taking much more time. This problem was identified as probably being caused by the 26498 patch and has been fixed in the Throne of Bhaal 26499 BETA Patch. Only install this patch if you are having this specific problem. For more information and to download the patch, click here.

CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device and WinXP

A frequent problem posted on this forum involves the combination of WinXP and a CMI8738/C3DX PCI Audio Device. If you have random crashes or reboots during BG2 play, the solution most times is to go to http://www.cmedia.com.tw and get the newest drivers (apparantly, version 632 or higher). Uninstall your old drivers and install these ones and the game should work correctly. This problem happens most often with WinXP, but those with other OS versions may also want to look into it if they are having similar issues with this device.

Nvidia Graphics Cards

There have been numerous problems reported running BG2 with Nvidia's Detonator reference drivers version 23.11, although some people seem to run it successfully with them.

If you're having trouble with crashes, or with your sound, I suggest you try using version 28.32 instead, which can be found on the Nvidia website.

If that one doesn't help, it's worth trying version 21.83, from the driver archives on the Nvidia site.

Windows XP

Windows XP is not a supported Operating System for BG2. However in most cases it runs without problems, provided you have current drivers for your hardware.

You should also make sure you have the latest patch. See the patches section of this FAQ for more details.

For those of you with Nvidia GeForce(1, 2, 3 or 4) based cards and a Sound Blaster Live! card, you need the latest drivers for your Live! card, and the latest Detonator drivers (version 28.32) for your GeForce card.

Detonator 23.11 has been known to cause problems with BG2, especially when combined with Sound Blaster Live! cards on Windows XP.

The newly released Detonator 28.32 drivers haven't been tested much by us on the forum yet. They're worth a try, but if you have problems, get 21.83.

Note that if you have a GeForce card with special features such as TV-Out or Video Capture, they probably won't be supported by the Detonator reference drivers, and you will need to download drivers from the website of the manufacturer of you card (eg. Hercules).

This information basically applies to Windows 2000 as well as XP, though you should double check that there aren't seperate Win2000 drivers available for your hardware (in most cases they are combined with Windows XP drivers).

Loud Squeal In Dungeon Areas

There is a problem with the cavern echo Environmental Audio (EAX) effect which is used in areas flagged as underground/dungeon. It will cause a very loud, throbbing squeal to come out of your speakers.

Disabling EAX from the options screen in-game while in those areas solves the problem. Downloading current drivers for your sound card should stop it occurring at all.

This problem only seem to effect Sound Blaster Live! Value cards.

"Install" Replaces "Play" Option

This problem is caused by registry cleaning programs such as Norton WinDoctor incorrectly detecting the registry entries for BG2 as faulty and deleting them. After you've reinstalled, applying the latest patch for BG2 prevents this problem reoccurring.

Configuring Firewalls and Routers

In order to play BG2 in multiplayer, you need to allow the game to use certain ports.

You need to open the following ports to both TCP and UDP protocols, permitting both inbound and outbound traffic:

For BG2: ports 2230-2400, and 47624
For Direct Play: ports 2234 and 47624

The program for BG2 is "BGMain.exe", found in the folder where BG2 was installed.

The program for Direct Play is "DPLAYSVR.EXE", and will probably be found in "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\" or "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\"

The procedure for allowing that access is different for each firewall/router, so if you don't know how to do it you should consult the accompanying documentation.

Special thanks go out to Cirneth for providing most of the info in this section.

Sound Blaster Sound Cards

Various people have encountered severe slowdown problems with Sound Blaster sound cards. Usually the Live! Value or the Audigy.

In the case of the Live! Value, updating your sound card drivers to the most recent version, and also your graphics card drivers (especially if you have an Nvidia graphics card) usually solves the problem.

The Audigy slowdown problem can be solved by turning off Environmental Audio (EAX) in the game. Downloading the latest drivers also seems to fix this problem, and should enable you to play with EAX enabled.

Antivirus and Crash Guard Software

Having other programs running in the background while BG2 is running can often slow the game down. In the case of Antivirus and Crash Guard type software, the slowdown is often very bad.

It's a good idea to disable these things while you are playing BG2.

The worst offenders seem to be McAfee antivirus, and anything from Norton.
