NPC Number 3 Shi'nayne Auvryndar
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:44:57 PM »

Shi'nayne Auvryndar

Race: Elf (Drow)
Class: Wizard
Alignment: Neutral Good

STR 14
DEX 17
CON 12
INT 18
WIS 9
CHA 14

Background:

When asked about her past SHI'NAYNE says that her mother, Sharillae, died when she was a young child after they were fleeing from a drow hunting party. Shi'nayne was raised by King Hreidmar Stonecrusher and his wife Brynhildr as if she was one of their own. They did this out of honor, Shi'nayne's mother saved their oldest son Magnus from a drow hunting party that was pursuing her and he happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. Sharillae had jumped on top of the young dwarf and took a poison tipped drow bolt in the back which proved to be fatal to her. Shi'nayne grew up in a loving home but she did have hardships, being a drow elf growing up in a dwarven city, step daughter of the king or not. One of the king's human friends, a wizard named Tarlach Velnaar, saw potential for magic in the young drow and took her in as an apprentice. Shi'nayne has become a powerful war wizard and has defended her adopted home many times. Over time she has become curious about adventuring and leaving the Stonecrusher Delve, but does not out of the sake of duty to the Stonecrusher Clan. She may be convinced to join your group if you prove yourselves worthy and get the permission from the king.

*Background version 2.

Other notes:

Her mother fled from the city she was from once her true nature was discovered. She was one of the few that believed drow society was vile and disgusting. She had been influenced by the beliefs of Eilistraee. She took her young daughter with her and left to go to the surface and find followers of Eilistraee. Soon a drow hunting party caught up with her and they battled. A curious dwarf child heard the commotion and went to see what was going on. One of the drow warriors saw him and fired his crossbow at the child, Sharillae jumped on top of the child and saved him and took the poisonous bolt in the back. The dwarf king and his men arrived and saw this happen. They slayed the remaining drow party. Nothing could be done for Sharillae with the drow poison filling her veins. The dwarf king was dumbfounded that a drow would risk their life to save a dwarf so he declared that he would honor her memory and raise her child as one of his own.

Shi'nayne has a diary that belonged to her mother and knows the hardship and pain she endured when she was part of drow society. She hates evil drow with a passion and may let her temper get the better of her when she encounters them.

Her fondest memory that she can remember about her mother was her eyes. Her mother may have been physically and emotionally scarred but her violet eyes were always kind.

I already had dialogs for this former NPC mod written so I thought about on how not to waste that work. The idea came to me to put her in this mod. After some thought on how to make this work I came up with the above story.

Shi'nayne sounds very interesting.

I particularly like your plans to have her raised by dwarves, and for a credible reason. She probably picked up a lot of her core values there, even if she follows her mother's faith.

I'll be watching this one with great interest.

Beings are not inherently evil, they're either raised or influenced that way. As can be seen in Shi'nayne. Shi'nayne being brought up by dwarves gave her morals, a sense of honor and loyalty, being fair and just, just basically being a good person out to do the right thing. She's not ignorant about her people. Her mother's diary gives her insight into drow as well as any books and tomes she has read, plus any first hand encounters with them.

She can speak Undercommon, common, elvish and dwarvish. She's smart but not wise, she is young after all and hasn't seen the "world" yet.

She'll be fun to write more about. I like unique and different characters.

The game can always use another drow in the party, one that isn't evil.

I think she's cool as well.  Really!  I once saw a sticky somewhere about "overused ideas" and it included "kind-hearted drow" but I think most of that list is bunk because the idea may not be uncommon in that particular charicteristic, how many of the ideas on the list are actual finished NPC's?     Hardly any!!!

Plus I really like the dwarven connection.  THAT is certainly unique!  I wonder what Korgan would have to say about her?   :evil

I will be watching her with great interest as well.  And as usual, thank you for your continued work in the modding community.  Not many are left who work so hard and care so much.

Of course Berelinde is one of them as well.  Her Gavin is one of my absolute favourites.

I don't think this one fits the "overused idea" description. She isn't a good drow lurking in the Underdark waiting for the PC to stumble across her, and there's nothing supernatural about her conversion. She's had a background that totally supports her current beliefs.

If you tilt your head a certain way, all NPCs are a bit cliche. Oh, look, there's a guy standing in a bar, looking for adventure to find him (Anomen). And right next to him, there's a damsel in distress (Nalia). You might have trouble finding room for them, though, because you've probalby already got the requisite dumb fighter (Minsc) and the strong-willed female (Jaheira) in your party, as well as the obligatory AsianKara-Turan katana-wielding guy (Yoshimo).

The question is, are they done *well*? No way to answer that before mod release, but at least we know her background will be unusual.

Good points, Berelinde.  I guess I was mainly focusing on that list in the sense of the basic idea, despite how it may actually come about, and see how many of those ideas we see come alive for us to enjoy in our games.

I really like this character.  Of course, we'll not be able to have her and Callisto together regardless!  But I think she and Ninafer would get along just fine.

Well she is not a muppet like Drizzt. She's no super hero that can slay a 1000 orcs in one swing. Well she could hurl a fireball into the group.  :P

The dwarves taught her about loyalty and she's fiercely loyal to the dwarves. If you foolishly made the Stonecrusher delve hostile, well she'll turn hostile on you.

Also she basically hates her own race. Not that the dwarves had to influence her on this but she loved her mother dearly and after what the evil drow did to her to make her mother leave the city and killing her, well she's got a burning hatred towards drow, the evil sort. She may have issues when you go to Ust Natha.

A banter with Aerie.

SHI   Aerie I was wondering if we could talk if you have a moment.

AERIE  W-what is it drow?

SHI  Why the hostile tone Aerie? Have I done something to offend you?

AERIE  You're a d-drow what more is there to be s-said?

SHI    Ah I see now. For your information and peace of mind, I am *nothing* like my evil kin, well except my appearance that is. They have no loyalty except too themselves, have no honor and basically they are a scourge that needs to be eliminated.

Except for those rare good drow who happen to embrace the Dark Maiden and the Tel'Seldarine of course.

AERIE  I-I am surprised to hear a drow speak like that about her own people Shi'nayne.

SHI   They are not my people Aerie. The Stonecrusher dwarves are my "people", more so than a drow ever could be.

AERIE   Oh. W-well what did you want to talk about?

SHI   I was going to ask you about the surface elves since I had not met any before you and <CHARNAME> came to the Stonecrusher Delve.

AERIE   What d-did you want t-to know Shi'nayne?

SHI   Nothing at the moment. Our brief discussion gave me some insight on questions I had that dealt with surface and drow elves getting along with one another. Quite simply they don't.

I was hoping that Shi'nayne would give Aerie a tongue lashing.  :(
