IE games and newer graphics cards

(1/1)

Redrake:
I reached to the conclusion that my new graphics card (Geforce 8600GT) sucks royally when it comes to older games. Almost no old game works as it should (IE games included). Strange black boxes, crashes and various other atrocities. I messed around a bit with IWD2 (since it is the last IE games made) trying different configurations. The best I could do to make more playable was to disable direct draw acceleration, enable Software Transparent BLT and play it on 1024x768 resolution. It is however quite slow at some points.
Here's how it looks without the configurations:

This should serve as a warning to people looking to upgrade their systems. New games (NWN2) might run without any problems but the older ones (BG2 included) are going to become unplayable.

Please see this thread. Following the instructions, you should be able to get better graphics than that. I've got the same video card in the new laptop, and IWD2 looks just as good as it ever did.

That advice doesn't work unless you disable directdraw acceleration. If you don't, the game moves too slow to be played.

Solaufein:
Well good thing ATI cards are friendly with older games. I don't know much about the GeForce cards any more. The last one I had was a GeForce4.

Redrake:
I had a Geforce4 before too. No troubles. But as far as I found out, all the Nvidia graphics cards above 7 generation are extremely bad at 2D rendering. And while new drivers are being released Nvidia concentrates on new games (basically on 3D problems). Unless someone manages to scrap some unofficial driver that makes those work with older games (I do not know if it is even possible).
