I noticed a lot of Euros and Asians walk or ride bikes. It would be nice if Americans could do that with current gas prices, but we would most likely get run over by people driving cars. Being careless and impatient.

I hate cars, so I either use trains/buses or walk (if distance is less than 3-4 km)

But for Americans these prices, I think, are quite okay. For us, they're often killery.

Wish they had public transportation in my part of the world. Before I went to college, I'd never been on a bus that wasn't arranged specifically to take children to school. It caused a problem because I couldn't figure out how to tell the driver to stop when my stop was coming up.

Now, they have limited rural bus service, kind of. It's less expensive than driving, but there are only 2 busses a day, so you'd better not miss it.

There are trains, but none in my part of the state, and they are far more expensive than driving. If I'm going to drive 3/4 of the way to work anyway, I'd rather not have to pay $10 a day for the last 15 miles.

If America was more like Europe where people rode bikes to their destinations, we would have less over weight people.

Expensive trains? :o
Here they are quite cheap. 10 bucks would be here the equivalent of a 400 km road. Not to mention that students get half the price while those who are retired travel for free. I wouldn't even bother to go by car. OTOH, here the gas price is not as cheap as in US.

In Europe 1l of gas costs as much as one galon in USA ::)

At one time trains were a popular mode of transportation. But Americans like to have their own car to drive so public transportation with trains is slowly being phased out. Not completely phased out but its something not in demand any more.

Yeah, trains are past their heyday, which annoys train enthusiasts no end.

Personally, I love travelling by train. I do it whenever I can, which isn't often. But the closest train station to my house is still 30 miles away, and the only places it goes are Newark NJ, or New York City. Any time I want to go into New York City, that is how I go. Since I work in a different part of the state, and one that uses a different rail line, I'd have to drive 45 miles to get to the nearest train station that serves the area. If I drove 60 miles instead, I'd be at work.

Right now, gas is going for US$2.80-thereabouts a gallon. New Jersey has relatively low gas taxes, so it isn't as bad here as elsewhere in the US.

Fuel around here is $3.48. It makes me stay home except for work and going to the grocery store every week.  >:(

Or the grocery store might be 5 miles away. I wouldn't want to have to carry a weeks worth of groceries for 2 people and 5 cats back from the grocery store.

That would be too much weight to walk. Unlike our computer generated characters who can carry 100lbs of armor and 50-100lbs of goods in their many miles of travels.
