Imoen, Edwin, Vicky. The 4th one would be Coran.

This is a toughie.  You really should have five votes as then it would resemble what constitutes your "ideal party" (though that also depends on the character I'm playing... good vs. evil etc.).  But somewhat arbitrarily I picked Kivan, Khalid and Safana (I'll explain more below).

Minsc is the strongest fighter...
Wrong.  He is a ranger, hence he can't specialise to the same degree as pure fighters (or even multiclassed ones).  Once you get those proficiency notches up, fighters as tanks far surpass rangers, who are best left in the back ranks as archers.  I usually play as a CG fighter-thief, so I like to have another fighter in the front rank.  That means even wussy Khalid can become a better tank than Minsc.  Kagain is even better - he can regenerate with such a high CON which is priceless.  But in an unmodded game (or even a modded one), he can become crotchety, especially over reputation/alignment issues (even my F/T can get a high rep).

Well, I couldn't cast 3 votes for Kivan...
You and your Kivan obsession. :P  But yes, Kivan gets pretty much top vote for sheer butt-kicking archer power alone. :D

It's such a shame - if you want Khalid and don't want to cheat, you have to have Jaheira and her absolutely annoyin' personality in your group, too (such as kick Jaheira out of group and escape area or let her die and kick her out).
Actually, you can just send her into an empty building and *then* kick her out.  But if you find her so annoying (which she is), what's so sad about having her 'accidentally' get chunked on a 'solo scouting mission'? :evil

And Safana because I like having another thief to fully 'clean up.'  I'll usually specialise as a 'locksmith' and put her points into pickpocketing, which seems appropriate for her.  ("That nice man upstairs at Feldepost's offered me his beautiful cloak!  Honestly, it practically fell off his shoulders into my hands!")  Imoen is ok, especially as a dualed mage, but can grate on the nerves after a while. ;)

If you don't like Jaheira, or any one half of a pair, why not get Sword Coast Strategems, which allows you to separate NPC pairs?

Kivan, I guess. Was and is the best man in BG1 - first with his Composite bow +1, then with Drizzt's scimitars. I wish he retained his fair hair and plain ranger kit in BG2, though.

I wonder if the results would look significantly if, as Tervadh suggested, we had been allowed five votes?

It would be easier to kill one of the pairs.

But if you're role-playing a good character it's rather difficult to justify doing that.

I am a world-class waffler. I will always, in any given circumstance, hedge my bets.

In game terms, this means that I will never, ever, kill any NPC that I might later want to recruit for some reason.

Besides, that component is sweet! You get to send both of the pair to an inn, then recruit whichever one you want to retain. No muss, no fuss, and the unrecruited NPC stands around forever waiting for you to come back.

I get to adventure without Jaheira, and still play within my preferred alignment.

Next game, I am going to recruit Eldoth and Skie, come hell or high water.

The easiest way in the world is to send Jaheira into an empty building (any house or cave will do) and reform your party to kick her out.  She can't come up to you to drag Khalid away, so problem solved.  Now it can be *fun* to kill her off, but not the easiest way (and as Nevar said, hard to justify in character if good or neutral).

@berelinde - I thought this topic was about unmodded games (not that it makes a difference in this case... my way is still easier than SCS :D).

I should add that I usually round out my party with a cleric and a mage.  Branwen and Dynaheir are as good as any, if for no other reason than you can get them fairly early and hence have more control over their development.

Imoen, Kivan and Jaheira

Alora seems really fun, but it takes so long to get to her that she's never been part of my parties.

If you use the BG1 NPC Project, you can get her in Gullykin.

Speaking of BG1 NPC Project is it complete now, or are there any plans for further developments?

There will be a bit of new content in the next public beta. There's that reputation modification system that Jastey dreamed up and cmorgan and I finished, and there's a little sneaky, top-secret material that I'm not at liberty to discuss... :evil

What top-secret material?! I am a (minor) writer and coder for the mod, and I don't know anything? Atrocious! Kulyok will rule all... ahem.

No, really?
