Blasted and Bother!
« on: December 22, 2006, 06:42:27 AM »
My outlook with Alora.

I will keep the original plans of the Edwin/Alora friendship. I think she is someone who can crack Edwin's arrogant attitude.

She will have banters with all of the npcs. I can just see her and Mazzy getting along just fine. Mazzy being such an uptight halfling, how unnatural!

More latrz!

As discussed in the other thread, maybe Mazzy and Alora can get along. Smiles everyone smiles!

I think their shared optimism will unite them and help them settle whatever differences they may have.

Maybe those two have something similiar they can relate to in their childhood?

They came from the same village? But that is so cliche.

They like the same halfling food/drink?

Suffered a similiar hardship in life?

Alora's originally from Iriaebor, whilst the Fentan family home is in Trademeet so it's unlikely.  ;)

I think you're on safer ground, both are likely to be discriminated against because of their size/race.

You only need to go as far as "The What Race Do Play" thread to see that.  :-\

Both are fighting a stereotype?

Well, Mazzy is. Alora, not so much. But she'll probably respect what Mazzy is doing.

Not really it was more a suggestion of what could unite them. Alora is likely to have experienced some racial/size discrimination at some point during her travels.

On one hand it could give her more depth, on another - the character is so light and cheerful, that dumpening it might not be too cool. Why not base their friendship exactly on the fact that they are so *different*. After all, the opposites do attract.  You can even do a funny banter where Mazzy and Alora try to find *anything* at all in common between them, but failing miserably and it would be a nice non-direct way to address the idea of stereotyping a race. :D

That could work ... I guess I'm just convinced that Alora's overly happy demeanor is
the outward manifestation of some deeply repressed rage or childhood trauma (like Ned Flander's Flanderisms in The Simpsons)

But its so very rarely in real life that mannerisms like Alora's appear *without* such things. Yes, there are happy people - but Alora is kind of... like Imoen (a chipmunk on a sugar high with a deathwish ;)), but a lot worse. Then again... I guess I'm just a sucker for a gritty characterisation, where everything has a reason. :P

True. A person that has had a traumatic past can resort to acting like the class clown, always laughing when deep down they feel horrible pain. The acting funny, acting foolish is their way of covering up their pain. Psychology 101 taught me this.

(Shrug) Whatever works for you, but it might be stripping her from something that was very rare in the NPC world. :)
