Attempt at coloring the male Drow profile...
« on: January 08, 2006, 08:05:12 PM »
I liked the lineart/sketch for one of the male Drow, and thought I'd color it/mess with it since I had a minute...

Gotta say, I love your art (not to mention your awesome mod), Mistress Elysia!

Hey, that's a pretty nifty work there!
Even though it's good as it is, there are a couple of things which, IMO, could be looked at for improvement:
. the background - a forest? Portraits of drows in a forest are a bit unlike them, since they live and dwell underground. :?  But it's cool, even though it is a bit too dark, making the trees hard to visually separate, like all the trees being together like that is hard to tell which is which. But that's almost irrelevant in a portrait too, so...
. the hair. The face is cool, but the hair could use some shades and lines, to fight the blurriness.

It's lovely :)  - and I like the background (because I love forests  :-D). And after all, there *are* some drow on the surface, and some come there for raids etc.

The coloring is *very* nice! My reservations about the background is not because it is a forest, but because it is so bright. It might "kill" the portrait itself in the game. Try either fading it, or go for more traditional "sky" background. :)

Actually, for Elysa's collection to be uniform, maybe we can come up with a "uniform" background ideas? Ie canvas, or forest, or window, or mountains, or Bhaal's banner?

That's lovely! You've really done a lovely job there (aww, Xanather's coloured! He's actually a friend of mine's character and has wings, but I thought a winged drow really was stretching even the realms of BG!) - lovely rich skin tone, and I really do like those scars you've given him! :D

Tips for colouring hair - if you have photoshop - use the smudge tool. Set it to a fine brlush and set the flow to about 70 - this  way you can 'stretch' the ends of the hair, giving them a more natural, flyaway look ( however, white hair is a nightmare to paint and it took me ages to learn how to do it - I'm still not that good, but I'm learning all the time :) )

Ashara - I think you're right; we should come up with a 'uniform background' plan. I'm happy to have drow in a forest (There could be more than one version of drow portraits - one for the surface and one for the Underdark), but it is a tad bright - is there a way to make the background fit the style of painting you've done on Xanather? (Paint though I may, I can't do manips to save my life!!). That way the lovely skin tone you've given him won't be swamped out by the trees :)

Heh, gee, comments

Most of the reason that that version of the port looks kinda wonky is because I only spent about 15-20 mins. on it, tops. The whim just possessed me at the moment while I was battling boredom  :)

Anywhoo, I worked on it a little more and tried to make it work a little better (though I went nuts with the hair, I know  :o ) Trying to prevent it from becoming -too- dark... A problem I usually have with my art, unfortunately, especially since my monitor's pretty bright in itself. *shrug*

(Thanks for all the tips and comments, too-- they make Shadowmoon happy <3)

Second version is *very* good. Great work, Shadowmoon. I really like the red glint in his eyes now, and the hair look much better with a darker background.

Extremely well done. :)
The hair looks very good now, and the background is perfect, too. :)

You know, this makes me want to play a drow. That is more of a compliment then you might think; I kinda dislike drow characters  :D

The hair has a very light and featherish 'feel' to it, I love it! It doesn't look like normal hair, but it's still quite clearly hair. I think it's perfect for a drow.
