I have a brand new install for BGII, and no other non-BW NPC's than Saeri. What characters go well with her? Presently, I have my PC, a Paladin, a PC Cleric (to avoid the BW Romances), Nalia, Minsc, and Saeri? Who should I add or substitute?

You need a thief, unless you installed the "No Traps or Locks" component from Ease of Use.

As I recall Nalia has something around 45% on open locks and find traps which is way too low for all but the simplest locks in the game (Unless you want to be klicking around forever you need 100 or more). So unless you want to carry around an insane amount of potions of master thievery and potions of perception I would suggest taking Jan into the party. He's the only permanent BW NPC who's thieving skills actually improve during the game and he is also one of the best mages. Jan annoys most of the other NPCs but never to the point where there is an actual conflict and he actually seems to get quite well along with Saeri. You might also want to consider substituting Minsc with Keldorn as the innate True Seeing and Dispel Magic abilities are a great help, especially in the later stages of the game. If you want your own paladin to have Carsomyr then you can just give him Lilarcor or a halberd (provided that you give him proficiency in them first).

LOL... I'd forgotten Nalia even had any thief skills! As Veldrin pointed out, Nalia's thief abilities are inadequate for BGII. You can either get Jan, or do the classic Yoshimo/Imoen tag team.

Here's a third option: given that you have a PC cleric in the party, why not make him/her a Cleric/Thief? Multiclass is probably the best bet here; you don't need that many cleric spells, and you can ignore Hide in Shadows/Move Silently since C/Ts can't backstab (Cleric = blunt weapons = no backstab).

One really irritating thing about cleric-thieves is the way that the thieving button is hidden away beneath the special abilities button. Bloody annoying, that...
