Armin Kasun / Re: Temporary Absence
« on: September 01, 2020, 07:58:43 PM »
After having found my old files for this, I must say it's a little depressing how little I actually finished in the time I was working on this project.  I know I was busy, but yikes!  I think I'm a little bit more motivated as a writer now than I was in the past and certainly less prone to getting stuck on one thing.   In about the past week I have already exceeded (for another character) what I did for this mod.  I no longer just delete ideas when they don't work out, but instead I mark them and return to see if I can rework.

So will Armin revive?  Maybe.  I do like to keep a couple projects going at once in case I get writer's block for one of them.

Speaking of missing people, I think I've been gone for seven years.  Real life (including a herd of kids) has a way of removing my free time.   Free time is often noisy now, so it's hard to concentrate on stuff like this.   I'm going to try getting back into this however.  I've tried a bunch of other games, but BG has the modding capability that I like.

I don't think I've deleted my old work, at least as far as this mod goes.   In fact, I pulled some work I had done on another idea and inserted it into this mod.  I'm not sure if I'd keep it in the long run, but I was trying the method of just getting something written down rather than having an empty (or almost empty) sheet.

But it's still tempting to delete it!

I'm considering trying to set aside time to work on this again.    I just have to reinstall BG2, all my mod-making tools, my modding install, and find my backup files since I reformatted.   Why is fun so much work?!   :P

I have absolutely no idea about the quality of your mod or not, but if you have the free time to work on it and it's something you enjoy tinkering with, I see no reason why you shouldn't work on it.   I'd do the same with mine if I could find a good chunk of time to sit down and relearn all the coding and try to get some dialogue written out.

Hey!  Another person who can't write who tried making an NPC!  Welcome to the club!  :)

I got the email, but I, too, am also already here, though more or less inactive.  I can understand why people move on.  Even if interest in this game is still there (which it is for me), there ARE other things that come up -- hobbies, work (always work!), and so on.   Still, it'd be nice if people checked back once in awhile.  I tend to do that on old sites that I used to frequent, even if it's just once in a blue moon.

One more banter done today!  It's slow progress indeed, but life always comes first.  I just had an idea (actually I dreamed it and remembered it, but that's quite rare!) that I thought I should write down.  Naturally, it sounded much better when I thought of it, but that's usually how it goes.  Ah well, at least it's something.

You're probably right, Jastey.  Thanks for the advice.  Writing is like an art, I guess, and it seems many artists (not that I'm saying I'm an artist!) don't like their own work.  Odd how that works.   Sorry about not replying so soon!

Back to that temporary absence... well, I'm still absent.  I never lost interest in doing this, but right now I really need to be spending my time doing other things in RL and I can't afford to spare a large chunk of it to work on a mod, unfortunately.   I keep saying, maybe someday...

It's hard to believe that it's been nearly eight months since I worked on this thing!  Anyway, I just started tinkering with it again, but I've only written one banter today.  It's not much progress, but it just shows that I actually DID something.  I think I need to see that more than anyone else does.   Hopefully I'll have some more ideas pop up so I can get a lot more done.

Well, that was a long extended absence.  As I said elsewhere, I decided to just focus more on RL for awhile, so poor Armin had to sit in a closet for a long time.   I'll see if I can get a few things written for him now, though , admittedly, I've forgotten a lot of my ideas because I never write them down!

Speaking of writing, does anyone else have the problem that I do of writing something, not liking it, deleting it, writing it again, and repeating?   I have that.   In fact, the last time I reread everything I did for this attempt at a mod, I was dissatisfied with the majority of it and had the temptation to erase the whole thing and start over.  For those of you who have that problem, what's your solution for just moving on and not getting yourself in a permanent cycle?   Maybe I just need to realize that I'll never be a best-selling author.  Ah well.

Well... I'm alive still!  I took a step back from a lot of my computer stuff to focus more on RL things so I've been gone awhile.  I'm not sure how active I'll be here, but I'll TRY to get something done, but it's no longer a primary focus of mine since I've got a lot of things that are far more important that I should be doing.

So my temporary absence has turned out to be an extended break thanks to some things beyond my control happening.  Armin isn't abandoned, but just on ice.

Would it be possible to submit a board design? I'd be interested in tinkering with one, if so. My only past experience with forum skinning is with invisionfree, however.

Are you referring to changing the layout or just editing the graphics?  I've edited the graphics on phpBB before and it's not hard.  I imagine that it's probably not that much different with any type of board.
