Dark Side of the Sword Coast / Assertion error in Naskel mines

I just downloaded the DS mod for my son; I installed over a fresh Baldur's Gate (6 disc) game, and have no other mods installed.

When he tries to enter the third level of the Naskel mines, the following message comes up (and the game crashes):

An Assertion failed in d:\dev\baldur\objcreature.cpp at line number 10806

I have played Baldur's Gate (without the mod) all the way through myself, so . . . any ideas on what is causing this?

• Sir_Carnifex: Of course, it's always complicated.  I think last time I returned I had to salvage my files from a dying computer.  Now my current computer just decided that it wants to corrupt all my programs.   Ah, the joy of technology!
